The third personal comment that I would make is that when you make the right personal changes, I believe this with all my heart, other things begin to turn out right. Talk about where your mind went when you said, I know I need to grow and Im going to absorb as much content as I possibly can. What led you down the path of saying, What resources? Change has always been something that I was not good at, change anyway. The friends I dropped in my early years, the friends I dropped in my early years were those people that werent thrilled with my progress. All of that takes time. Yeah. In those family rooms, Chris, a real reoccurring opportunity, challenge, opportunity to really address things in the organization began to bubble up. Im going to give you an intentional growth plan right now. Im passionate about personal growth because for that person who says, Wow, I had an opportunity, I wasnt ready.. I read the book when it launched in 2021 and it captivated me throughout, however when I got to page 197, the paragraphs below made since a big impact on me. The reason a lot of people don't reach the top level of . They know the demands on leaders all too well. And to you too, Mark. I know change can feel, like you said earlier, very fear, very anxious about change. You talk about it, were talking about it on the podcast. Lets go backwards a little bit. But thats why were going to dig into personal change and getting adapted to that. When the opportunity comes, heres the way. Im going to go, Hey, Im getting ready to do some changes. Most recently I cut out all the travel in my schedule for the first quarter of 2023, and Im loving it by the way. It says, Man, feedback is a gift. I can promise you that after 40 years of personal growth, the secret of any success, if Ive had any success at all, the secret of that success has been personal growth in my life. And I think that we, as the podcast community, the Maxwell Leadership Podcast community, we certainly rally around leadership. Ive read more books, not than you have, but that I did in the first couple weeks of last year because of the challenge that youre putting out with us. Ive said it, Well I sure hope things will change. Now, I just want to say under that kind of a quote, the only way things will change for me is when I change. Number three, identify the areas that you want to grow personally in. Im delighted today to talk to you about some of the laws of leadership. But I would say in preparing yourself for growth theres an intentional action around putting yourself in uncomfortable situations to build that muscle, callouses, whatever you want to call it, that helps become more adaptable. Preparation, practice, reflection. We all look at ourselves and say, We want change. John talked about that at the beginning. Weve talked about growth, I guess, every way that we can. He always does. Tie it to leadership, tie it to your growth, whatever. We're actually going to talk about how to make the most of your mistakes! Then that became at the top of my list. In part one, John shares nine observations about the nature of problems and problem-solving. Set a New Years resolution anyway. So Rocky was telling, one day were having dinner together, and he said, Earl Weaver, he said his favorite comment when you made your first bad call in the game. But hes decided to make some significant changes in his life for a growth perspective, for more opportunity. What I love about that is that John says, If we want things to get better, then weve got to go after it on a daily basis. Now, Im going to take you down a little bit, if you dont mind, I want to take you down a little bit of a different path than maybe normal. And who knows, maybe this year will be just like the last nine and youll fall off and be unexcited three weeks from now. Again, all that comes back to get people to give you input from their perspective with the clarity and the simplicity that youre going to lead the team. Im your friend. Well, I think that the longer that I have lived and the more that I lead, it literally, to this day, even if I think about leading in a new dimension of ownership, theres really this appreciation to change that comes when you weather, when you sustain yourself through changes and you see the great results that happened because people willing to change. Person says, Well, why do I start with myself?. This is very powerful and positive as we unpacked this, Im sure. John says, Hey, were going to make a commitment. You did the reflection. So when people say, I like things to turn out better for me. I have been, in fact, yesterday in a leadership meeting that you and I were in, somebody brought me another book on momentum. Talk about then what you heard, what you learned as youre growing through this, and the reflection and how powerful that was. We will continue to work hard to add value to you. And I would go now, number one, its early January, youre listening to this, you still have time to go and get this year on track. Its a retreat that I have with myself. I certainly believe that its a muscle that we have to exercise within us a belief that change is going to bring about something positive, and in that positivity is a chance to grow and become better. He makes everything sound so simple and its a talent of his. The first thing that you did was you said, Im going to go and Im going to reflect on what I heard. You do this every year. He was able to make that because the only guarantee of tomorrow is going to be better is because of growth today. In other words, sit down and say, Okay, where am I going to grow specifically?. Im privileged to have a weekly call with a bunch of leader minded people. And what that means to me in the area of personal growth is I have to have, every single year, a very intentional track, a very intentional set of outcomes that I am expecting and a very intentional plan to impact and grow and change the five key areas of my life. The second one we have on our card, and every single one of our team members have this is it is about growth. You want to grow in an area of choice and you want to grow in an area of skill, so thats two.
